Protecting your skin from the sun is the best way to protect against aging skin, skin cancer, and dark spots. The importance of sun protection for darker skin tones has often been overlooked and many mineral sunscreens can leave a residual white cast that is more visible on darker skin tones. Volition Beauty’s Adaptint™ Super Seamless Mineral Shield SPF 30 has two formulas for warmer and cool/neutral undertones that do not leave a white cast and instead blend and adapt to your skin's natural undertone.

No more mismatching between your facial SPF and your skin undertone with this adaptive and blendable, tinted mineral protector. Enjoy a flawless, natural-looking matte finish with age-defying skincare benefits, safe in the knowledge that you're wearing SPF (but it doesn't have to look like you are).

What is a skin undertone?

While your skin tone can change throughout the year depending on your skin's reaction to sun exposure, your skin undertone never changes. Your skin undertone refers to the latent colors beneath the surface of your skin.

How do I determine my skin undertone?

There are many ways to determine your skin’s undertone. It’s widely understood that there are three undertones: warm, neutral and cool. Adaptint™ Super Seamless Mineral Shield SPF 30 offers two formulas: one for warm undertones, and another for both cool and neutral undertones. Some of the most common ways to determine undertone are examining your veins, what color jewelry looks best on your skin tone, and the color palette of your clothes and how your skin reacts to sun exposure.

Youtuber Haley Kim has tips to help you find your undertone in this video. Fashion magazine Allure, and Health Line, a health and lifestyle website, have tips to help find your undertone as well. Here are some of our favorite tips.

Vein Color:

Look at the color of your veins. Look at the inside of your wrist, right below your palm. If your veins appear green, you have a warm undertone. If your veins appear blue, you have a cool undertone. If there is a mix of blue and green, you have a neutral undertone.

Jewelry:

Many people agree that one of the simplest ways to determine your undertone is by the jewelry you use most often. Does gold or silver jewelry flatter your skin? If you prefer gold jewelry, you could have a warm undertone. If you'd rather wear silver jewelry, you could have a cool undertone. If you look good in either color, you could have a neutral undertone.

Color Palette:

Check the general color palette of your clothes. If you often opt for warm earthy colors like green, brown, and orange, you could have a warm undertone. If you prefer to wear jewel tones like blue, red, and purples, you could have a neutral. If you wear a mix of all colors, you could have a neutral undertone. If you aren’t sure what your general color pallet is, this is a good guide. This test can help you determine your color pallet and skin undertone.

Sun Exposure:

How your skin reacts to the sun can be a good indicator of undertones. If your skin burns easily, you may have cooler undertones while a skin that tans or turns more golden can be warmer.

Makeup:

A lot of foundations have undertones specified for each shade. If you have a foundation you know is your match, you may be able to check the bottle to see if it says the undertone.

You can also take this quiz from Seventeen Magazine to help determine your skin undertone.

Using the tips above, what if I get different results from each test?

This is a general guideline for skin undertones. For example, it is not uncommon for someone to prefer to wear silver jewelry but wear earthy colors. The most reliable way to determine your skin undertone is the vein color test. However, not everyone is able to see the color of their veins depending on their skin tone. Therefore, we advise using a combination of tips to determine your skin undertone.
