In 2022, we made a pledge to make significant improvements in Volition’s packaging sustainability. We would like to take a moment to re-assert this pledge as well as provide an update on our achievements over the past few years.
2016
All Volition unit cartons printed in California using vegetable ink.
2018
All Volition facial moisturizers and serums packaged in glass jars, a material that is readily recyclable in almost all locations.
2021
All Volition unit cartons printed on certified FSC cardboard.
2022
All Volition packaging eliminated (1) the rose gold-colored coating on plastic and glass, (2) the matte frosted coating on plastic components, and (3) the hydrofluoric acid etching on glass components. This change increased the recyclability of Volition packaging from an average of 85.5% to 94.6%.
All Volition labels eliminated the non-recyclable rose gold laminate and migrated to a fully recyclable PLA material, which is a bioplastic derived from plant sugars.
2023
Oil-Control Mattifying Mist relaunched as Volition’s first product made with 30% PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastic material for its bottle, pump and cap.
2024
A year of transition with continued sell-through of hybrid packaging (mixture of old and new) as we ran down obsolete packaging to avoid sending any discontinued components to landfill. We still have a few residual products that are made up of some older components as we complete our “zero-waste” transition.
Goals for 2025 and beyond
There are now more Volition products in glass packaging than plastic, and we have set a goal of >70% new launches being in glass packaging for the future.
We are reducing the volume of cardboard needed for every Volition unit carton by 10%-20% with the elimination of oversized boxes for each Volition product. This in turn will reduce the cardboard material needed for the large shipping boxes to transport the products, and will make freight overall more efficient.
The majority of Volition’s products are now manufactured at a certified Climate Neutral facility. This means that the laboratory is accountable for its greenhouse gas emissions. To earn the label, a company must annually measure cradle-to-customer emissions, implement specific action plans to reduce emissions, and invest in high quality, verified carbon credits. The Climate Neutral certification requirements are detailed in the rigorous, peer-reviewed Climate Neutral Certified Standard.
