Working from home (WFH) can be pretty tough and at times, feels like a lawless land. Kids crying on Zoom calls, makeshift workstations, drinking way too much coffee… sound familiar? It can be difficult to adjust when you've become accustomed to your everyday routine. Here's some tips that can help you successfully get through your workday at home and conquer the day like a total boss.

#1. Routine is key

You lose a lot of structure that you might not even notice when you don’t work from the office. Sticking to a set schedule helps you stay on track and sane. Try waking up, eating meals, and taking breaks at the same time each day. Your day will feel much more structured and that routine will soon become normalized.

Tip within a tip: Whether you do it on an app or a notepad, write out your to-dos at the start of the day or the night before. This is so you can plan your day accordingly, hold yourself accountable, and ensure you don’t miss anything important. Also, who doesn’t love the feeling of ticking off a completed task?!

#2. Freshen up

This one might seem taboo since about 90% of the appeal of WFH is looking like a complete potato in peace. However, getting cleaned will make you feel more like a working professional and less like a teenager on summer break. Do a quick skincare routine, brush that hair, ditch the pjs, & take on your day.

Make sure you're wearing your SPF even if you're at home! Sport your Prismatic Luminizing Shield SPF 50 for ultimate protection + prepare for complements galore on your Zoom calls.

#3. Do NOT work from your bed

There’s a reason you don’t mix business with pleasure and this is a prime example. Treat your bed like no man’s land. Once you get up (and make it), fight the temptation of getting back in. If you work from your bed, your brain no longer associates it as a place of rest so when it comes to nighttime, you’ll find it more difficult to fall asleep.

#4. Blue light protection

Whether you’re at home or in the office, staring at a screen all day can take its toll. Blue light emitted from devices not only can strain the eyes, but potentially damage skin. Studies have shown overexposure to blue light derived from devices can stress, dry out, and cause photo-aging on the skin. Take breaks from your laptop + keep a Screen Time Hydra-Mist at hand to spritz on your face every 1-2 hours to help protect skin from those harmful rays.

#5. Over-communicate

Lots can slip through the cracks when you’re not in the office. Be sure to over-communicate with your team so everyone’s on the same page and nothing is missed. Send more frequent status emails & chat through Google Hangouts, Slack, etc. to keep up communication.

For upper-level management, schedule recurring Zoom team meetings for company and department updates. Since work culture takes a hit when WFH, include fun prompts, exercises, or opportunities to connect after work hours to keep morale up.

#6. Reward yourself

There are distractions on top of distractions at home and it can be difficult to stay focused. If you’re having trouble sticking to a task, set a timer for 20 minutes to solely work on it without distractions. If you did so successfully, treat yourself with a cup of joe, pastry, a walk outside, cuddles with a pet, or whatever brings you joy! Then, move on & repeat. Allowing yourself to work on projects in intervals of time is a lot less daunting and an incentive helps you push through.

#7. Don't stay sedentary

It is easy to sit or lay down all day when you’re stuck at home, but you should still stay moving! Do an at-home workout from YouTube, Pinterest or Instagram to help you out. If you’re having trouble staying motivated, video call a friend to do it with you! If you break a sweat, spray the Oil-Control Mattifying Mist to keep oil and shine at bay.

#8. Get productive

You’ll find that your day will feel more purposeful if you do more than just “work work.” Allow some time to do some chores around the house while you are home. Throw a load of laundry in the wash. Sweep the floor. Clean the kitchen. These tasks help you feel more productive and make your living space cleaner. A clean space = a clear mind!

#9. Step away from the screen

Time away from your electronics is good for your mental health. Be sure to decompress and do some non-screen-related activities. Check out some of these suggestions:

Go outside to get a breath of fresh air 🌳

Play a puzzle, board game, or card game 🃏

Read a book 📚

Paint or draw 🎨

Do a face mask (We recommend our Detoxifying Silt Gelée!)

Play with your pet 🐶

Redecorate or rearrange your room 🛏

Play around with makeup 💄

#10. Don't get down on yourself

Making a drastic change from one routine to a whole new one is hard. Don't beat yourself up if you're having difficulties adjusting because that's normal! If you're having trouble focusing, just take a breather and step away from your work until you're in the right headspace. Meditate, say or read positive affirmations, and try to uphold a positive attitude.
